Giovanni Reyna scored a last-gasp winner to give Borussia Dortmund all three points against Mainz 05.

It was a dream start for the hosts who found the back of the net after just 90 seconds. Edimilson Fernandes whipped in a superb corner which Jae-Sung Lee was able to meet at the near post. A brilliant header from the South Korean international to fire his side ahead.

Mainz's joy didn't last long though, less than two minutes later Borussia Dortmund were level. Julian Ryerson, who didn't cover himself in glory for the Mainz opener, made amends at the other end by cutting in from the right before firing an effort towards goal with his weaker foot. A deflection from Edimilson Fernandes was enough to take it away from Finn Dahmen and into the back of the net.

After a hectic start to the game, the match settled down as Borussia Dortmund began to dominate possession, often playing with eight or nine outfielders in the Mainz half of the pitch. Without the ball, Edin Terzic's side pressed Mainz high up the pitch with intensity in order to win the ball back.

Karim Adeyemi came close to opening his Bundesliga account for Borussia Dortmund after 13 minutes. The 21-year-old latched onto the ball around six yards out but could only fire his effort over the bar.

For all of Dortmund's possession in the first half, they struggled to create many clear-cut chances, Niklas Sule and Donyell Malen both had their efforts from distance saved by Finn Dahmen but that was as close as Dortmund got to a second goal in the first period.

The second half started in the same way that the first half ended, with the away side dominating possession in Mainz's half as they probed for an opening.

Mainz began to grow into the game around the 50 minute mark and were able to create a couple of half-chances within quick succession. Their biggest chance of the second half came after 56 minutes when Silvan Widmer was able to find a yard before firing in a cross to the near-post which Karim Onisiwo met but could only divert his effort wide of the target.

Edin Terzic turned to his bench just after the hour mark, making a very attacking triple substitution, introducing Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, Sebastian Haller and Giovanni Reyna as his side hunted for an all-important second goal.

Dortmund looked a lot quicker and more dynamic when attacking following the triple change, but still struggled to create many clear-cut opportunities thanks to resolute defending from Mainz.

The hosts ventured forward with greater frequency in the last 10 minutes, smelling the possibility of a late winner. Angelo Fulgini's effort inside the box was saved by Gregor Kobel and just a couple of minutes later Aymen Barkok saw his volley go just wide of the post.

Just when Mainz thought they had earned themselves a point, Giovanni Reyna popped up at the back post to divert Sebastian Haller's header into the back of the net. It was Reyna's second winning goal in the space of four days after his winner vs Augsburg.

A huge win for Dortmund and one that could be very important in their hopes for European football later on in the season.
