Girls' sectional basketball pairings are set, and now, so are regionals
The IHSAA's new regional-semistate format for basketball will be on display in a few weeks with the draws for both sectionals and regionals announced on Sunday.
Sectionals will run Jan. 31-Feb. 4. Regionals will now be a one-game affair on Feb. 11. The semistates on Feb. 18 are now two games (two semifinals and a championship) with those pairings and locations announced the day after the regionals. Tickets for sectionals are $7 and $15 for an all week pass. Tickets for regionals are $10 and have been raised for semistate to $12 per game and $20 per session with kids under 5 free.
Area regionals will take place at Bedford North Lawrence (4A), Greencastle (3A), Crawford County (2A) and Southwestern (Shelbyville) (1A). Southern semistates will take place at Greencastle, Shelbyville, Jasper and New Albany, with each site assigned four teams from the same class.
Here's a look at how things will set up a week from now:
THE DRAW: Tuesday, Jan. 31, Bloomington South (12-7) vs. Mooresville (15-6); Center Grove (17-4) vs. Greenwood (8-12). Friday, Feb. 3, South/Mooresville winner vs. Martinsville (0-22); Center Grove/Greenwood winner vs. Bloomington North (14-6). Saturday, Feb. 4, championship. REGIONAL: At Bedford North Lawrence, vs. Shelbyville Sectional champion, 4 p.m.
WHAT IT MEANS: Interesting rematch in new look sectional awaits for Bloomington South, which knocked off Mooresville, 58-45, on Jan. 12, just a few days after losing what was essentially the CI title game vs. Columbus North. The Pioneers were semi-state qualifiers last year. They've won 12 of their last 14 (the other loss was to Indian Creek in a tournament at Lebanon). The winner should be playing for a title as the Arties are averaging just 28 ppg and were held to two points by Center Grove. The No. 13 Trojans are the favorites, having won 13 straight dating to Dec. 1 and have allowed only two teams in that run (Jeffersonville, 41 and Jennings County, 49) to reach 40 points. But they will have to play their rivals in back-to-back games, ending their season with the Woodmen on Tuesday (Greenwood has Perry Meridian on Thursday). North, which got the other bye, has won seven of its last nine and has a chance to win out.
THE DRAW: Tuesday, Jan. 31, Bedford North Lawrence (19-3) vs. Jennings County (15-5). Wednesday, Feb. 1, Floyd Central (9-11) vs. Silver Creek (12-8); New Albany (4-18) vs. Seymour (12-8). Friday, Feb. 3, Jeffersonville (14-8) vs. BNL/Jennings County winner; Floyd Central/Silver Creek winner vs. New Albany/Seymour winner. Saturday, Feb. 4, championship. REGIONAL: At Bedford North Lawrence, vs. Evansville Harrison champion, 7 p.m.

WHAT IT MEANS: Bedford North Lawrence is the heavy favorite again while looking for a 12th straight sectional title. The Stars average margin of victory over the other six? 35.2 points. But Jennings County came the closest of anyone, falling just 52-39 on Jan. 3. BNL was a 65-21 winner over Jeffersonville on Nov. 19. The bottom part of the bracket is a toss-up. Silver Creek played Floyd Central to an overtime and lost to Seymour by three on opening day. The Owls beat Floyd but lost to Jeff by one.
THE DRAW: Tuesday, Jan. 31, South Vermillion (0-20) vs. Brown County (11-9). Wednesday, Feb. 1, West Vigo (7-14) vs. Edgewood (3-16); Indian Creek (21-1) vs. Owen Valley (10-13). Friday, Feb. 3, Northview (14-8) vs. SVermillion/Brown County winner; West Vigo/Edgewood winner vs. Indian Creek/Owen Valley winner. REGIONAL: At Greencastle, vs. Speedway Sectional champion, 1 p.m.
WHAT IT MEANS: Brown County and Northview escape heavily favored No. 4 Indian Creek until the final, but the host Patriots do not. The Braves won their meeting on Dec. 2, 76-47 and that's the most points any WIC team hung on IC. Edgewood, mired in a nine-game losing streak, has a shot at its opener, having lost to West Vigo (7-14) 45-40 on opening day but the Mustangs will have to get their offense back in gear. Two of the Vikings wins have come over winless South Vermillion and two more have come against Clay City (6-15). Northview beat BC, 49-47, on Nov. 18.
THE DRAW: Tuesday, Jan. 31, Paoli (13-10) vs. North Daviess (6-13); Sullivan (14-8) vs. South Knox (16-6). Wednesday, Feb. 1, Linton (16-3) vs. Eastern Greene (16-6); North Knox (21-1) vs. Mitchell (4-16). Friday, Feb. 3, Paoli/North Daviess winner vs. Sullivan/South Knox winner; Linton/Eastern winner vs. North Knox/Mitchell winner. Saturday, Feb. 4, championship. REGIONAL: At Crawford County, vs. Switzerland County Sectional champion, 4 p.m.

WHAT IT MEANS: There is no 'easy' side of the bracket, just an 'easier' one up top with two state ranked teams in the bottom half in defending champ and No. 2 ranked North Knox and No. 9 Linton, who could meet in the semifinals. Linton must first deal with the host T-Birds, who would have to beat two ranked squads just to make the final. Brutal. The Miners won their meeting, 57-28 on Dec. 1, holding Keylee and Kenady Hudson to a combined 16 points and dominating the last three quarters. Mitchell drew the favored Warriors, whose only loss was to Brownstown Central, 31-30, in the semifinals of the Toby Yoho Classic. Up top, at the same tourney, Paoli is dangerous, having played North Knox and South Knox to within four points each. South Knox beat Sullivan 44-32 on Nov. 30.
THE DRAW: Tuesday, Jan. 31, North Central (17-4) vs. Shakamak (12-8). Wednesday, Feb. 1, Bloomfield (9-11) vs. Lighthouse Christian (5-13); White River Valley (9-11) vs. Clay City (6-15). Friday, Feb. 3, Dugger Union (7-13) vs. North Central/Shakamak winner; Bloomfield/LCA winner vs. WRV/Clay City winner. Saturday, Feb. 4, championship. REGIONAL: At Southwestern (Shelbyville) vs. Eminence Sectional champion, 4 p.m.
WHAT IT MEANS: Tough assignment right off the bat for LCA with Bloomfield at home and the two-time defending champs. Sub-.500 record, yes, but Bloomfield was 10-11 when it won last year and this year's schedule will have them prepped. The two have never played before. North Central beat Bloomfield 52-49 on Dec. 3 and T-Birds only losses are to Linton, Eastern Greene, North Knox (a combined 53-10) and 3A Owen Valley.
THE DRAW: Tuesday, Jan. 31, Vincennes Rivet (11-9) vs. Loogootee (3-18). Wednesday, Feb. 1, Barr-Reeve (13-8) vs. Shoals (5-17); Washington Catholic (4-14) vs. Orleans (10-12). Friday, Feb. 3, Springs Valley (13-7) vs. Rivet/Loogootee winner; Barr-Reeve/Shoals winner vs. Washington Catholic/Orleans winner. Saturday, Feb. 4, championship. REGIONAL: At West Washington vs. Rising Sun Sectional champion, 4 p.m.
WHAT IT MEANS: Orleans and WC will be unfamiliar foes in the opener, while Barr-Reeve beat Shoals 46-21 on Jan. 17 and topped Orleans, 41-38, in the second game of the season. Rivet, a sectional champ last year. is 5-0 against the field and that includes a 51-34 win over Springs Valley on Jan. 7. Orleans' only sectional title came in 2016.
