After two victories, VfB Stuttgart suffered a clear 5-0 (3-0) defeat at Borussia Dortmund. Jude Bellingham not only excelled because of his brace.
It was the duel of form opposites. Since Pellegrino Matarazzo was sacked, VfB Stuttgart have played two competitive games, winning both and doing so superbly, beating VfL Bochum 4-1 and Arminia Bielefeld 6-0 in the DFB-Pokal. Now it was up to VfB in Dortmund, BVB hadn’t won a league game for over a month – but this series ended like the Stuttgart side had soared.
After just 91 seconds, the trend was in that direction. Niklas Süle, this time set up as a right-back, crossed the ball low into the penalty area and Jude Bellingham made it 1-0 for Dortmund.

Nevertheless, VfB presented themselves according to their recent performances, played boldly and offensively. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel prevented the reward when he parried Tiago Tomas (9th) from close range. Four minutes later the ball was in the opposite goal, after a free kick from Raphael Guerreiro Süle scored his first goal in BVB jersey (13th).
As a result, it was still a fast-paced game at a high level. Immediately after the 2-0, Dortmund were extremely dominant and had a triple chance, in which Karim Adeyemi ultimately missed, and had the chance to score the third goal (21st). Then Stuttgart got back into the game better, but failed again and again due to strong central defenders Mats Hummels and Nico Schlotterbeck.
The emotional high point came shortly before the break. Giovanni Reyna dribbled from the left corner of the penalty area towards the center and flicked the ball into the far corner to make it 3-0 (44 ‘). The US national player triggered a storm of jubilation, his BVB colleagues threw themselves at the emotionally overwhelmed 19-year-old, who was repeatedly thrown back by injuries in his young career.
The team of interim coach Michael Wimmer nevertheless started the second half boldly and had the first chance after a few moments through Serhou Guirassy, who missed the goal (46′).
But BVB struck again – namely the outstanding player of the team. Bellingham got through in a tight space and steered the ball into the opposing goal in a similar way to Reyna before (53′). It was not only the second goal of the England international, but also the next proof of his extra class, which Bellingham showed against Stuttgart in particular.
The fourth goal was apparently the goal that broke the resistance of the Stuttgart team. In order not to experience an even more bitter afternoon, VfB then acted more defensively. And so it was quiet in front of the gates for a long time, a free kick from Guerreiro, which VfB goalkeeper Florian Müller was able to parry, caused danger again (71′).
Only a minute later, the BVB fans were cheering again. Again, the black and yellow combined too quickly for the opposing defensive and Youssoufa Moukoko only had to insert the last pass from three meters into the empty goal (72nd). It was the early end of a BVB gala with an outstanding Bellingham.
Before it continues nationally, Borussia Dortmund welcomes Manchester City to ex-BVB striker Erling Haaland on matchday 5 of the Champions League group stage (Tuesday, October 25th, 2022 at 9 p.m.).
On the 12th match day of the Bundesliga, Stuttgart meets FC Augsburg at home (Saturday, October 29, 2022 at 3:30 p.m.). BVB has to pass three hours later in Frankfurt.
